Over the years theories and assumptions have come up to best describe some ones character what most people know as personality but until now it remains a mystery to everyone.
Some people have come to explain ones personality through mere appearances, dress code, origin, background, ancestors and what they believe in. Other people’s personality has been determined through the kind of work they do, through the schools they go to; the assumptions go on and on but at the end of the day everyone has a personality that best describes them for who they are.
Personality has been given very many different shades to the point that even the people you spend your time with determine your personality.
According to research personality is the outcome of continuous personal quality development process. However it is important to note that personality does not evolved by a single factor. It is a mixture of a lot of things. Some of those factors are psychological, some are physical, some are biological and some are even hereditary.
Physical factors play a vital role in determining our personality given the community that is surrounding for example in some African societies they determine ones personality by their height; if you are short you are known to a quarrel some person. Other people determine personality through skin color (black / white); beauty has also been used to determine personality not to mention birth position.
Uganda has also had a great deal of personalities who are known by their great contribution to this country for example Ignatius Kangave Musazi who formed the first political party in Uganda (Uganda National Congress) and was buried as a national hero in 1990 at Kololo Airstrip. The first prime minister of Uganda Benedicto Kiwanuka was also known for having a great personality. He was also one of the early leaders that led this country in the transition between colonial British rule and Independence.
Our current Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda is also one of the few Ugandans who are still known for having a great personality because of the services he has provided to this country. He served as Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs 1994-1996, Minister of Internal Affairs 2003- 2009. Subsequently he was the Permanent Representative to the United Nation 2009- 2011 and also served as the Minister of Health 2013-2014. For that matter Rugunda has been known to be a man of great character and personality.
On the other hand the things that revolve and evolve around us on a regular basis have also contributed to our personality; the current hostile environment that we are getting exposed to on a daily basis is shaping us into the people that we are now, the relationships that we involve ourselves in that help us become better than we were or worse than we were, our family environment is also a contributing factor to who we are. Our leaders, role models and elders have greatly contributed to who we are and hope to be.
With that being said, let’s not forget the cultural and religious aspect of life. The customs, rituals, regulation and values that have been passed on to us by our ancestors and our religious leaders have been a contributing factor.
Today ones character is best describe by what they believe in a case in point the constant Alshabab attacks have changed the world’s opinion about Muslims. This also applies to the traditional healers who have been considered to be ignorant and back ward not only in character but also in their way of life.
Though their different factors that determine or best describe our personality, it doesn’t mean that’s who we really are; sometime we fail to find ourselves or understand the people around us simply because we are driven by different things and we cannot always be the same people we used to be.
Personality always changes; no matter how many assumptions and theories have come up to explain the aspect, it is important to know that the very factors that determine our personality are the same factors that affect it.
Despite all that, it’s important to know that the factors that determine our personality are the very factors that affect it so we have to choose wisely and not judge a book by its cover.
